Secure communications with Open Source PKI

PKI used to be reserved to 'Big Corp' and '.gov', but the open source tools have matured over the years and are now available for everyone. In this presentation we want to show how PKI works and how you could benefit from it.

  • When is Public Key Infrastructure useful and when should it be avoided?
  • What is Public Key Infrastructure and how does it work?

We will demonstrate how certificates can be used in common applications like

  • Firefox: SSL client authentication to an Apache web server
  • Thunderbird: SMIME email signing and encryption
  • OpenVPN: Authentication in a virtual private network
  • Ant: Codesigning jar-files
