The Rockbox Story

Daniel Stenberg

Rockbox is a Free Software project writing a portable music player operating system and application suite currently runnning on around 30 different devices.

This talk will explain how we work in the Rockbox project to reverse engineer firmwares in portable music players, to learn how each individual hardware works and then adjust Rockbox for that hardware and make Rockbox run on said hardware with everything done using free and open software. Including background, obstacles, a project overview and a bit about what the current problems are and what the future holds for us and similar projects trying to make free software for closed platforms. What YOU can do to help!
