After I had written my bachelor thesis about designing an easy-to-use user interface for an end-to-end secure messaging system, I have moved on to ask myself the more general question: Can we build a completely privacy-aware and end-to-end secure social network?

My goal is to enable communicating users to not have to trust any intermediate entities, such as servers and the Internet as a whole; to allow them to be in control, as well as "owning" their (free) software, their data, and their personal information, while at the same time make the software easy to use and available to everyone.

I will talk about Yabasta, an XMPP-based approach towards this end, as well as mentioning what some of the challenges are.
