This talk will give an overview of the GNOME platform from the perspective of application developers. New GNOME technologies will be discussed and their use will be demonstrated by way of development of a simple example application. The focus will be on "the boring parts" that need to be done in a particular way to get things to work, but are not usually considered to be a core part of the application functionality.
Areas covered:
- setting up a build environment
- application support
- storage of user settings (preferences)
- internationalisation (translations)
- proper installation (your app appears in the shell with an icon)
The talk is directed at those who may be interested in developing applications for GNOME. A working knowledge of object oriented concepts is assumed. A basic knowledge of GTK+ or another toolkit also helps.
