Many people in Sweden today has a reading disability that makes it difficult to read subtitles when watching a movie. This could be due to dyslexia, aphasia, developmental delays or a visual impairment. This talk will present Subtext to speech, a module in development to the free and open source media player VLC. It uses synthetic speech to read the subtitles track aloud while a movie is playing.
The talk will show how spoken subtitles' effect on the target group's ability to more independently follow a movie's plot will be evaluated. It will discuss the fact that, if proven valuable, a free module built into a FOSS media player that is rather wide-spread will ensure an increased accessibility and independency for a large group of people.
